Sometimes mixed musical backgrounds don't gel, but just two bars into Blofeld Experiment's performance (at Joe's in Summertown) at the Oxford Jazz Festival proved that this North East based jazz quartet have mastered the art of working with each other's considerable musical talents. Further listening unveiled a cornucopia of engaging and exciting original music ranging from energetically swinging 'Cumbrian Pirate' through the gorgeous balladic 'Rose of Sheron' to the malevolent insistence of 'International Passport'. Loose but right on the tempo button, the bass and drums partnership of Blackadder and Carnegie forms a rhythmic and rooted backdrop to the bands musical meanderings and the harmonic interplay between pianist Gilbert and sax man Werner is at times astonishing. This first festival showing for one of the country's freshest most forward thinking jazz quartets was a complete sell out and promises great things to come.
